ANGLING IN MID-SOMERSET
The River Parrett is noted for its winter roach fishing. Although these, obviously, are present all the year round, fishing for them really comes into its own when the summer weed has died down and the river settles into winter trim. Being a lowland river, the Parrett is subject to spate conditions and flooding after heavy rains; but as the river level starts to drop after these conditions, the fish are often tightly shoaled and hungry. Maggot and caster are the favoured baits, but sweetcorn and bread are always worth a try. Hemp is a great attractor, and is worth a try on the hook, as are tares. Other species present are bream, perch, rudd, dace, gudgeon, carp and pike. Coombe Lake is primarily a silver fish venue, although it does contain a few very hard to catch carp. We created this lake ourselves from a green field site and we are very proud of what we have achieved. Bream and tench are the main target fish here, although the roach and perch will do their best to convince you otherwise.
